About this Race
In October 2020, one of our D97 Kindergartner’s, Mann Mustang Owen Petrzelka, lost his brave 6-month battle against DIPG, the deadliest form of childhood brain cancer. Since 2020, his family has organized a virtual 5K run, in conjunction with the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation, to raise funds for childhood brain cancer research. The 3rd annual virtual 5K run is scheduled for Saturday, October 1. Locally, we want to make it an even bigger community event that lives up to one of Owen’s mottos of “making someone happy is our job.” To that end, on race day, the 900 N Grove block in Oak Park will be turned into a community fun zone where community members, whether they are running or not, can stop by throughout the day for some fun kids’ activities, food/drinks, and live music. Whether someone wants to run, donate to the cause, and/or just come celebrate with our community, everyone is welcome! The school that raises the most donations will be awarded the first annual traveling trophy, which they can proudly display in their school until next year’s run.
